Am I eligible to apply for a German passport?
You are eligible to apply for a German passport if you are a Canadian resident with German citizenship.
You can claim German citizenship if your parent was a German citizen at the time of your birth.
If you were born before January 1st, 1975 and your parents were married at the time of your birth, it was compulsory that your father was a German citizen. If only your mother was a German citizen, you need to present additional proof of German language skills to become a citizen and get a passport.
If you were born before 2000 to non-German parents, you are not eligible for a German citizenship. If you were born in Germany in or after the year 2000 to parents who are long-term residents of Germany, you can acquire German citizenship under certain circumstances.
German citizenship regulations are based on the principle of avoiding dual citizenship. This means that, under most circumstances, you will lose the status of a German citizen if you voluntarily apply for another foreign nationality.
